Men, It’s Time We Talked (For Real) About Mental Health
Let’s be honest. Most blokes didn’t grow up being told it’s okay to talk about feelings.
They were taught to “man up,” to push through, to keep it to ourselves.
But here’s the thing: that silence? It’s costing them.
Men are still less likely to seek help when struggling. And yet, the rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide in Aussie men—particularly in rural areas—are heartbreaking.
So maybe it’s time to rewrite the story.
Not just yourselves, but for your loved ones, your children, your fathers, your partners.
Because looking after your mental health isn’t weak—it’s smart. It’s strong. And it just might save your life.
What Does Looking After Your Mental Health Actually Mean?
It's not about bubble baths (unless you’re into that—no judgment). It’s about tuning into what’s really going on under the surface and giving yourself a fair go.
Here are a few ways to start:
1. Check in with yourself (before you crash).
Mental fitness is like physical fitness; ignore the signs too long, and you burn out.
Ask yourself:
🌸 Am I sleeping okay?
🌸 Have I been snappy, tired, or withdrawn?
🌸 When’s the last time I felt genuinely good?
Awareness is step one.
2. Move your body, clear your head.
Even a 15-minute walk, a few push-ups, or kicking the footy with a mate can reset your whole nervous system.
Exercise isn’t just good for the body, it;’s one of the best tools for mental health.
3. Talk to someone who gets it.
You don’t have to spill your guts to everyone, but having one solid mate, mentor, or mental health professional to check in with can change the game.
No BS. No judgment. Just an honest chat.
4. Ditch the pressure to “fix” everything.
You don’t need all the answers. Sometimes the best move is just showing up, for yourself, for your family, for your community.
5. Take 1% of your day to reset.
That’s 14 minutes. That’s it.
To breathe.
To pause.
To ask, “How am I, really?”
You don’t need to overhaul your whole life. Just start with 1%.
