When Things Don't Work Out

Life rarely unfolds exactly as we planned.

We set goals, make careful decisions, and imagine how things will turn out. Then something changes. A relationship ends. An opportunity disappears. A plan falls apart. In those moments, it's easy to believe we've failed.

But what if things not working out isn't a sign that you've made the wrong choices?

What if it's simply information helping you decide what comes next?

Failure Is Feedback

One of the biggest mistakes we make is attaching our self-worth to an outcome.

When something doesn't go the way we hoped, our inner critic often takes over. It tells us we should have known better, worked harder, or been smarter. Before long, one disappointing event becomes a story about who we are.

The truth is much kinder than that.

Every outcome gives us valuable feedback. Sometimes it confirms we're on the right path. Other times, it invites us to pause, reassess, and adjust our direction. Neither outcome defines your value.

Notice How You Speak to Yourself

Imagine a close friend came to you after something important hadn't worked out.

Would you tell them they're a failure?

Would you say they'll never succeed?

Probably not.

You'd encourage them. You'd remind them that setbacks happen. You'd help them see what they could learn before taking the next step.

So why not offer yourself the same compassion?

The conversation you have with yourself during difficult moments shapes what you do next. Kindness creates possibility. Harsh criticism creates fear.

You Always Have a Choice

We can't control every circumstance life throws our way.

We can't control how other people behave or whether every opportunity works in our favour.

What we can control is our response.

Every setback gives us another opportunity to choose. We can stay stuck in disappointment, or we can ask, "What is this experience teaching me?"

That simple shift changes everything.

Moving Forward with Confidence

When things don't work out, give yourself permission to feel disappointed. Then remind yourself that one outcome doesn't define your future.

Look for the lesson.

Be curious instead of critical.

Trust that every experience is helping you become wiser, stronger, and more prepared for what's ahead.

Life isn't about getting everything right the first time. It's about continuing to learn, grow, and choose your next step with greater awareness.

Sometimes the best things in life begin with a plan that didn't work out.
